What is a double keyed deadbolt? It is a deadbolt that locks from both the inside and outside with a key. A double keyed deadbolt can be both safe and dangerous, depending on the specific circumstances in which it is used.  double keyed deadbolt On the one hand, double keyed deadbolts can provide an extra layer of security for a home. It is quite easy to break the glass on a door or the sidelight next to it and turn a thumb latch. Since a double keyed deadbolt requires a key to be opened from both the inside and outside of the door, it can make it more difficult for intruders to enter.
On the other hand, double keyed deadbolts can be dangerous in emergency situations. If someone is inside the home and needs to quickly exit in the event of a fire or other emergency, they may not have easy access to the key required to unlock the door. This could potentially delay their escape and put their safety at risk. Given the choice of a little extra security versus the safety of the people of the people in my home, safety will always win. That’s why my home inspection reports will always recommend replacing a double keyed deadbolt with a single keyed, thumb latch deadbolt. That’s my opinion…please consider the potential risks and benefits of each type of deadbolt before deciding what is best to install in your home.
